With a population of roughly 76,089, Scranton is considered the cultural center of the Lackawanna River Valley. On another note, there are also plenty of DUI arrests and DUI accidents reported in Scranton each year. A Pennsylvania study released in 2009 revealed that 11% of motorcyclists involved in a vehicle accident had consumed alcohol at the time of the accident. As a matter of fact, the window of time in which you have to react is limited and choosing to do nothing will surely result in the worse case scenario. According to the 2010 census, the city population was at 305,704, while the seven surrounding counties account for a total of roughly 2,356,285 people making Pittsburgh the 22 nd largest urban area in the country. Once known as the steel capital, Pittsburgh still maintains a very competitive economy, 25th in the country for jobs and 6th for job density. This is especially true in the education, technology, healthcare and financial services. In 2007, Pittsburgh boasted the title of “most livable city” according to Forbes and The Economist. With all those people and with so many interesting and diverse things to do, it’s no wonder that Pittsburgh is near the top of the list when it comes to driving under the influence or DUI arrests and DUI accidents.

With a population of 59,322, Lancaster is the 8th largest city in Pennsylvania and 101st largest in the country. The 15th president of the United States, James Buchanan called Lancaster home as did Congressman Thaddeus Stevens. Lancaster’s economy largely hinges on tourism, healthcare, manufacturing and other professional services. Interestingly, Lancaster has recently been known as being the only city in the nation with a city-wide surveillance system boasting more outdoor cameras than any other US city. There are also plenty of DUI arrests and DUI accidents reported in Lancaster each year. Lancaster County reports that their Impaired Driver Program completed 1,705 Court Reporting Network evaluations in 2009 alone, representing a 13% increase over the previous year. Males make up the majority of DUI offenders at roughly 76% and 20% of all DUI offenders in Lancaster County are between ages 21 and 24. Sadly, about 12% are actually below the legal drinking age of 21. Lancaster County also reports that Saturday proved to be the busiest day of the week for DUI arrests, as roughly 28% of offenders were arrested on this day of the week. Alcohol moving violations accounted for about 28% of arrests while about 27% were the results of alcohol related crashes.

As Pennsylvania’s state capital, Harrisburg holds a population of 49,528, making it the ninth largest city in Pennsylvania. Situated on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, Harrisburg is centrally located about 100 miles from Philadelphia, as well as being a relatively shorter drive to Allentown, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. Located just 10 miles outside of Harrisburg is Hershey, PA, home of the famous chocolate maker’s park and museum. In 2010, Forbes rated Harrisburg the second best place to raise a family in the entire country. That same year, Harrisburg was also bestowed the honor of being named one of the 20 “recession proof metropolitan areas.” This credit is owed in large part to the fact that Harrisburg’s financial stability can be contributed to its high concentration of state and federal government agencies.

On another note, there are also plenty of DUI arrests and DUI accidents reported in Harrisburg each year. Over the past year alone, the Pennsylvania State Police’s Checkpoint Strikeforce Initiative has arrested about 2,442 motorists for driving under the influence statewide with the Harrisburg/York area leading the way with 269 arrests. In 2008, Pennsylvania ranked fourth in the nation for the highest number of alcohol related fatalities: a staggering 1,468 to be exact. It happened in the 100 block of Nicole Drive around 10:45pm.

Officials said neighbors noticed the fire and contacted emergency crews.

There's no word on what caused the fire, but officials are investigating.

Fire crews said the family was not displaced from their home because only the deck was damaged.

Local Dominican population prepares for elections

Voters here in the Lehigh Valley could affect the outcome of a big political race in a country that's thousands of miles away.

The Dominican Republic is holding its presidential election this Sunday and with over 15 percent of the Dominican Republic's population living in the U.S. and Allentown, as the fastest growing city of registered Dominican voters in all of Pennsylvania, votes here may have an impact back home.

The choice is between two men, Danilo Medina of the ruling party which has been in power for the past 8 years and Hipolito Mejia, a man who was already president of the Dominican Republic between 2000 and 2004.

Carlos Salas is supervisor of elections here in the Lehigh Valley, “It can have a huge impact, because we have 13 hundred voters contributing to who's going to be the next president" he said.

The polling place for the Lehigh Valley is at Casa Guadalupe on North 2nd Street. Voters have from 7am to 7pm on Sunday and all they'll need to show is their Dominican I.D.

Other locations with polling places include Hazleton, Reading, Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Delaware.

This will only be the second time voters abroad will be able to cast a vote.

Teen cooks up big fundraiser for dogs, cats in need

A 13-year-old girl has turned her passion for animals into a money maker.

Kyra Hoerr is the brains behind a bake sale.

"We've got brownies and cookies and rice crispy treats," said Kyra, of Exeter Twp., Berks Co.

Prices for the goodies start at 50 cents and go all the way up to $10 for some of the other items in the tent.

Kyra has set up shop at Exeter May Days, but she's not keeping the money. Every cent the teen earns is donated to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.

This is actually Kyra's third year in a row selling baked goods, and every year she's upped the ante on the amount of money she hopes to raise.

"The first year I think we raised $435, and my goal was $400," explained Kyra.

Last year, she made more then $600 at the booth. And this year...

"The goal is actually $800," she smiled.

Kyra's passion for animals means big money for the Grey Muzzle Foster Program. It places senior and special needs dogs with volunteer families to increase their chances of adoption. Her check last year was the single largest donation to the program ever.

"I feel really proud because I'm probably one of the youngest people to donate," she said. "And to say that I've made the biggest donation too, I'm really proud of myself."

Kyra plans to hold her bake sale again next year with an even higher goal.

She'll be at May Days Friday night and again on Saturday if you want to help her cause.

Special Olympics draws hundreds of competitors, volunteers

Hundreds of men, women and children took to the field Friday for the annual Special Olympics.

The standing long jump is just one of the Olympic style track and field competitions that took place at Whitehall High School in Lehigh County on Friday.

More than 500 athletes took part in the annual Special Olympics event, which offers participants the chance to exert themselves and reach beyond their own limits.

Win or lose, the goal is to feel proud of your achievements.

There are 700 student and corporate volunteers who helped make the event happen.

Sherry Ferry, who coordinates volunteers from her place of work, has been helping out with Special Olympics of Lehigh County for nearly 10 years.

"Every year I come out to help because it's a great joy to see the kids having fun really enjoying themselves as best they can. Planning this Special Olympics competition starts in November," she said.

Sports coordinator Reid Ruhmel said the event has doubled in size in the last 10 years and he enjoys seeing the athletes demonstrate courage and experience joy.

"There's a lot of work and there's a great team when it comes to putting this thing together," he said. "When you come out here and see how well it runs and how excited the kids are (but) it's just a great fun event."

And the volunteers say, if the athletes have a good time then they know they did their jobs well.

Special Olympics has been in existence since 1968.

3-legged goat wins races, hearts

Berks County has a little warrior who is fighting for neglected animals across the region.

Her name is Peggy. She's an Alpine goat who has won many battles and many hearts.

"I've always kind of been a sucker for cute animals, and goats are very cute," said Colin Presby, Peggy's owner.

When Peggy was just two weeks old, a dog tried to tear off her leg.

For financial reasons, the owner could not afford the amputation, so Presby, then a veterinary technician, stepped in.

"I actually did the sawing on Peggy's bone, which was a little bit weird, but very neat," said Presby. "She did wonderfully well after the surgery."

Presby adopted Peggy, and she's been on the run ever since.

"She has always had a joy for running," said Presby.

It turns out Peggy has been entering races against goats with four legs, and winning.

She even beat out 50 goats in this year's Sly Fox Brewing Company Goat Race.

For her victory, a beer was named in her honor.

Peggy and her owner, Colin, are using the victories to create awareness for neglected animals.

By selling team Peggy T-shirts, Peggy has raised $3,400 for the Berks Humane Society.
